Expanded-Pupil Optical Technology Explained

Vision Biomed's patented 'Expanded-Pupil' technology and eyepieceless Dynascope™ technology allow users more efficient and easier use of optical microscope instruments in every application. The purely optical technology affords users greater freedom of head movement, significant reductions in eye fatigue and additionally increases the distance between the user's eyes and the eyepieces themselves - but how does it work?

How does it work?

Expanded-Pupil technology expands the optical image exiting the eyepieces of a microscope.

The expanded optical image affords users a greater freedom of head movement, reducing fatigue and additionally increases the distance between the user's eyes and the eyepiece by a factor of four. For high magnification users in particular, the Expanded-Pupil image makes for more comfortable viewing of the outer parts of the optical field.

Additionally, Expanded-Pupil technology also eliminates the effect of Mouches Volantes or 'floaters' in the eye. These common human imperfections result from tiny tissue fragments floating in the eyeball fluid and can significantly hinder microscope operations. The narrow, intense beam from standard eyepieces throws these fragments into sharp relief, appearing as floating objects.

Expanded-Pupil technology is employed in Vision Biomed's patented ISIS eyepieces, and are integral components of the Alpha stereo microscope. Similar patented technologies are used in the eyepieceless Lynx stereo microscope and the Mantis stereo viewer.



Optical Disk

At the heart of Vision Biomed's patented technology lies a rotating multi-lenticular [multi-lens] disc, composed of millions of lenticules [lenses], which act as independent image forming surfaces with diameters of a few microns each.

The disks spin at high speed to merge the millions of individual optical paths into an aberration-free, high-clarity image.

An example of the application of this technology is found in Vision Biomed's ISIS eyepieces.

ISIS eyepieces offer an exit-pupil diameter 10 times larger than conventional eyepieces, permitting a greater freedom of head movement, reducing fatigue and additionally increasing the distance between the user's eyes and the eyepiece by a factor of four.



Conventional Eyepieces


Conventional eyepieces have a narrow exit pupil, so users are required to precisely align their eye with the centre of each eyepiece.


Typically, a slight movement of the eye results in loss of part of the field of vision as the pupil moves beyond the narrow conventional exit pupil.



'Expanded-Pupil' Eyepieces


ISIS overcomes the usual requirement for users to precisely align their eye with the centre of each eyepiece, allowing for a more comfortable working position.


The expanded exit pupil of ISIS means that users can simply move their eyes to view the full image area, as the pupil stays within the latitude of the 10x wider exit pupil generated by ISIS.

The practical implications of ISIS include more efficient and easier use of quality microscope instruments in every application. For high magnification users in particular, the expanded pupil offered by ISIS makes for more comfortable viewing of the outer parts of the optical field.
